Alternate Red Eye Removal Techniques
for Versions Prior to Photoshop CS

If you don't have Photoshop CS and the Color Replacement tool, you can use most of the previous technique with only a few modifications. Here's a couple of ways to approach it:

Desaturate with Sponge Tool / Darken with Burn Tool

1. Use the Sponge Tool (it's grouped in with the Burn tool) set to Desaturate, a Flow of 100% and an appropriate-sized brush tip to carefully desaturate the offending red areas of the pupil. Zoom in real close for a detailed, accurate view of what you're working on. Unlike the Color Replacement tool, which works pretty fast, you may have to brush over the same area several times to get it to fully desaturate. Make sure you don't accidentally stray outside the pupil and desaturate the colored parts of the iris, or the eyelid.

Using the Sponge Tool, set to Desaturate and 100% Flow to remove the red from the pupil.

2. Once the red is desaturated to a neutral gray, you can then darken the pupils using the Burn tool as described in Step #6 of the previous technique.
